IS THERE A FUTURE FOR THE STEEL INDUSTRY IN EUROPE?

Wednesday, 15 June 2016, 18:30h

Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU, 1st floor
Avenue de Cortenbergh 30, 1040 Bruxelles

The future of the steel industry in Europe is currently at the centre of the political debate. And with good reason. Its significance as a strategic key sector for growth and employment in Europe is undisputed. 330,000 employees in 500 production sites in 23 Member States generate an annual turnover of EUR 166 billion, which corresponds to around 1.3% of EU gross domestic product.

One of the key lessons of the recent financial and economic crisis for Europe is that economies with a strong industrial core have managed the crisis much better than others. This is one of the main reasons why the European Commission in 2014 formulated the target that industry's contribution to GDP should be raised to 20% by 2020. A goal that can only be achieved with a strong European steel industry.

Many businesses and jobs in Europe are currently threatened by high supply and low demand. Again and again, overcapacity and trade distorting export practices of the world's largest manufacturer China have been held responsible for the problems of the European steel industry.

Recently, the European Parliament opposed the granting of market economy status to China with a broad majority. However, the political situation among the Member States' governments and the European Commission is not so obvious.

Welcome address:

Peter Scherrer, Deputy Secretary General, European Trade Union Confederation ETUC

On the panel:

Isolde Ries, Member of the European Committee of the Regions, Rapporteur of the CoR report on the steel industry, 1st Vice-President of the Landtag of Saarland
