Restructuring and Anticipation of Change: What Lessons NOT to Draw from Recent Experience!

[19-09-2012]
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), and the Brussels offices of the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB-Europabüro) and the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour (AK EUROPA) cordially invite you to the following panel discussion.

Restructuring and Anticipation of Change:

What Lessons NOT to Draw from Recent Experience!

Wednesday, 19 September 2012, 19.00 h

Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU
30, Avenue de Cortenbergh, 1st Floor
1040 Brüssel

Since the outbreak of the economic crisis over 5.400 cases of large-sale restructuring have been observed in the EU 27 - amounting to a loss of over 1.8 million jobs! This trend is likely to increase. As a result, calls for legislating corporate restructuring in the European Union intensify. A report, drafted in the European Parliament by MEP Alejandro Cercas, urges to establish an EU framework by involving all stakeholders to establish systems and support mechanisms `to help with anticipation, objective and impassive management, and conflict prevention`, where redundancies should only be considered as a last resort measure. At the forefront of any EU framework education and training, strengthening rights to information, consultation and participation are seen to be of utmost importance.

What would be the implications for such an EU framework on corporate restructuring? How does it affect enterprises, member states and all stakeholders involved? The panel discussion will be a starting point to elaborate on all these concerns and to discuss the proposed report by MEP Alejandro Cercas.

Participants to the discussion are:

MEP Alejandro Cercas, Rapporteur at Employment Committee on Information and consultation of workers, anticipation and management of restructuring

Judith Kirton-Darling, Confederal Secretary, European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC

Gyula Cserey, Cabinet EU-Commissioner László Andor

David Anciaux, Project Manager, CEEP

The panel discussion will be held in English.

Following the debate we invite you to join us for a walking buffet.
